Nerf N-Force is the one part of a loadout that never runs out of ammunition. When the darts are gone and everybody is crawling around the yard on their hands and knees, the player holding a sword is still in the fight. Here is every Nerf sword and melee weapon in the line, what each one does once you have swung it, and how to buy one now that it has left retail.

What Nerf N-Force is, and who it is for

Nerf N-Force was Nerf’s line of foam melee weapons: swords, axes, a mace, a polestaff and a shield, built as foam over an internal core.

They are shaped like medieval hardware and light enough to swing at your friends. No darts, no batteries, no priming, no jams. You pick it up and it works.

It earns its keep in 2 places.

  • The sidearm slot in a real war. Everybody plans their primary blaster. Nobody plans for the moment they are out of ammunition at 10 feet.
  • Anyone who wants to skip the dart economy entirely. Players run dry in about 4 minutes. A sword never does.

Fair warning from the shop: foam over a stiff core still stings when somebody with reach swings hard. These are safe. They are not weightless.

The first wave is what most people mean when they say Nerf N-Force sword, and it is worth noting that one of the 4 is not a sword at all.

Marauder long sword

Nerf N-Force Marauder long sword, 40 inches and the longest blade in the lineThe longsword, and the extra 8 to 10 inches it has on everything else is the real story.

Reach decides foam sword fights more than anything else does, and the Marauder simply reaches farther than anything else in the first wave.

It is also the heaviest at close to 15 ounces, so the swing lands with some authority behind it. That weight is the trade: it is slower to recover between swings than the Furies.

Best for anyone who wants to win the first exchange without stepping into range.

Warlock battle axe

Nerf N-Force Warlock double edged foam battle axe with its round shaftA double-edged battle axe with everything a battle axe has except the weight and the razor edges.

It is the shortest of the 4 and it was the most expensive at $24.99, which surprises people who assume the axe must be the heavy one. It is actually under 12 ounces.

Its round shaft is the reason I would bet on it lasting longest. A round cross section has no flat side to fold over when you block hard, and blocking is where these break.

Best for the player who blocks as much as they swing.

Thunder Fury and Shadow Fury

Nerf N-Force Thunder Fury short sword with its slanted tipThe same sword with 2 paint jobs. Identical length at 32 inches, identical weight at around 6 ounces.

The only real differences are a slanted tip on the Thunder Fury against a rounded one on the Shadow Fury, and the colour. Thunder Fury came in red, yellow or blue. Shadow Fury is blue.

Nerf N-Force Shadow Fury short sword with its rounded tip, in blueAt roughly half the Marauder’s weight these are the fast ones. They were also sold as a 2-pack under $30, which made dual wielding the cheapest way into the line.

Best for duels, and for anyone buying 2 weapons at once.

The rest of the rack

A later wave filled out an actual medieval loadout. Full write-ups on all 5 are in the Nerf N-Force weapons breakdown.

Vantage two-handed sword

Nerf N-Force Vantage two-handed foam swordThe two-hander. Our review never gave a size or a weight, so this page will not invent one.

What it is for is clear enough from the shape: committed swings with both hands on the grip, which means no free hand for a blaster.

Battlemaster Mace

Nerf N-Force Battlemaster foam mace, the slow heavy hitter of the lineThe slow heavy hitter. A mace is not a subtle weapon and this one does not pretend to be.

It pairs naturally against the Stonewall shield, because a mace is the classic answer to somebody hiding behind a board.

Vendetta polestaff

Nerf N-Force Vendetta double bladed foam polestaff, over 4 feet longDouble bladed and over 4 feet long, which makes it the longest weapon Nerf N-Force ever made, longer even than the Marauder.

It needs space. In a hallway it is a liability, and in an open yard it is the thing nobody wants to walk into.

Stonewall shield and dagger

Nerf N-Force Stonewall foam shield paired with its daggerThe only defensive option in the line, and the only shield Nerf ever made for it.

Sword and board changes how you play more than any other choice here. You give up reach entirely and gain the ability to walk forward into fire, which no other weapon on this page lets you do.

Klaw hatchet

Nerf N-Force Klaw foam hatchet, short enough to hang from a beltA short hatchet, light enough to dual wield and short enough to carry without noticing.

This is the one to own if you mainly shoot. It hangs off a belt while both hands stay on a blaster, which is exactly what a sidearm should do.

Which Nerf sword should you look for

Five answers, depending on how you actually play.

  1. For duels: the Thunder Fury or Shadow Fury. Around 6 ounces swings fast, and they were the cheapest way in.
  2. For reach: the Marauder. 40 inches of longsword outranges everything except the Vendetta polestaff.
  3. For sword and board play: the Stonewall shield and dagger, which pairs naturally against the Battlemaster Mace or the Vantage.
  4. For dual wielding: a pair of Klaw hatchets, the lightest and most agile option in the range.
  5. For carrying alongside a blaster: the Klaw again. Short enough to hang off a belt while your hands stay on a primary.

Using melee weapons in a Nerf war

Nerf N-Force slots into a dart war as a sidearm, not a primary. Get that straight before you build a loadout around one.

Decide before the game starts whether melee is allowed. Plenty of groups run darts only, and that argument is miserable to have mid-game. Our war games guide covers the conventions and the full game modes.

When melee is in, a sword tag usually counts the same as a dart hit. The sword carrier gives up a free hand, and that is the balancing cost.

The loadout that works: run a clip-fed blaster you can reload fast, hang something short off your belt, and stop treating an empty magazine as a reason to leave the field.

The attachments guide covers the rails, sights, vests and holsters on the blaster half. Several vests carry a back-mounted scabbard, which is the tidiest way to carry a Nerf N-Force blade. The full blaster list covers the dart side of the arsenal.

Safety rules that are worth agreeing out loud

  • No head shots. Same rule as darts, and it matters more with 15 ounces of foam on a stick.
  • No full swings at close range. Reach is an advantage, not a licence.
  • Eye protection. It is cheap and there is no good argument against it.
  • Agree what counts as a hit before anybody swings, not after somebody complains.

Reach against speed: how foam melee fights

Once you have swung two of these back to back, the whole range sorts itself into one trade. Reach against recovery.

A long blade wins the first exchange. It touches your opponent while they are still stepping in, and against anyone who has not thought about it, that is the entire fight.

The catch is what happens when the first swing misses. Forty inches of foam takes real time to bring back on line, and a 6 ounce blade is already coming at you by then.

So the short weapons win differently. They lose the opening, close the gap, and then land two or three touches in the time a longsword lands one. Anybody who has fenced will recognise the pattern immediately.

Three practical consequences worth knowing before you buy:

  • Indoors, short wins. A hallway removes the long weapon’s only advantage and keeps all of its drawbacks. The Vendetta is close to unusable in a corridor.
  • Outdoors on open grass, long wins. There is room to keep somebody at the end of the blade, and that is where the Marauder earns its price.
  • Against a shield, neither wins cleanly. The Stonewall lets its carrier walk straight through an exchange, which is why a mace exists.

The other thing nobody mentions: a foam weapon changes how a dart game feels far more than it changes who wins. Players stop retreating when they run dry, and games stop ending in a slow crawl through the grass looking for ammunition.

Where the line came from

The original 4 blades photographed above are 2010-era stock, which places the line squarely in the N-Strike years. That timing explains the design language: the same orange, the same moulded texture, the same shelf as the blasters it was meant to hang beside.

It was never a huge line, and the later wave that added the mace, polestaff, shield and hatchet is the one most people never saw in a store at all.

Durability, care and the honest evidence

Be straight about what is known here. These hold up reasonably well in general use, and the round-shaft argument for the Warlock is reasoning about a shape, not a test result. Nobody published a durability figure for Nerf N-Force.

What does wear out is predictable, because foam fails in the same 2 places every time.

  • Near the tip, which takes every missed swing into a fence or a wall.
  • Near the handle, where the foam meets the core and flexes on every block.

Store them flat or hanging, not bent into a bin. Foam takes a set, and a blade stored with a kink in it keeps the kink. Let them dry fully if a game ran through wet grass.

Painting and props

Foam takes paint beautifully, and a Nerf N-Force shell is a far more forgiving first project than a blaster with moving parts.

There is nothing inside to reassemble, which removes the single biggest reason first mods go wrong. The prep, primer and clear coat steps in the Paint Your Nerf Gun series apply directly.

If a costume is the goal, our modding and finishing section is the place to start. A weathered Marauder is a genuinely convincing prop, and it costs a can of paint.

Buying Nerf N-Force secondhand

Straight answer: Nerf N-Force has been out of production a long time. You are shopping the secondhand market, not a store shelf.

That changes how you buy. Prices swing on the aftermarket, condition is everything, and the 2-packs command more than the singles because fewer survived intact.

The foam is the product, so inspect the foam:

  • Check near the tip and near the handle first. Those are the 2 places a well-used blade goes soft.
  • Look hard at listing photos for scuffs, torn edges and compression marks.
  • Ask whether it has been stored bent. A permanent curve does not come out.
  • Prefer a seller with a photo of the actual item over a stock image.

If you would rather buy something current instead, our guide to the new Nerf guns covers what is on shelves now, including the One Piece Zoro katana assortment, which is the closest thing to new foam melee from Nerf in years.

Checklist card: buying used Nerf N-Force weapons, check foam near the tip and handle, ask about storage

The other honest option is to stop insisting on the Nerf N-Force badge. Foam melee did not die with the line, and if what you want is a foam sword that arrives new in a box, plenty of current production fits that description. You lose the collector value and the Nerf name. You keep the thing you were actually trying to buy.

Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most about Nerf N-Force and its swords.

What are Nerf swords called?

The line is Nerf N-Force. The swords are the Marauder, Thunder Fury, Shadow Fury and Vantage, joined by the Warlock axe, the Battlemaster Mace, the Vendetta polestaff, the Klaw hatchet and the Stonewall shield and dagger.

What is the biggest Nerf sword?

Of the weapons we covered, the Marauder is the longest sword at 40 inches. The Vendetta polestaff is the longest weapon overall at more than 4 feet.

Is there a Nerf katana?

Not under that name. Nothing in Nerf N-Force was ever sold as a katana. The closest in shape and length is the Marauder longsword, and the Thunder Fury’s slanted tip reads vaguely katana-ish if you are not fussy. Anything advertised as a Nerf katana is either another brand or somebody’s paint job.

Are Nerf swords safe?

They are foam over a core and they were sold as toys, so within toy rules, yes. The same war rules apply as with darts: no head shots, no full swings at close range, and agree on what counts as a hit before you start.

Why was Nerf N-Force discontinued?

The honest answer is that Hasbro never published a reason, so anything specific you read is a guess. What is verifiable is that the line stopped getting new releases and quietly left shelves. Melee styling carried on elsewhere, including in the Zombie Strike line.

Does Nerf still make swords?

Nerf N-Force is out of regular retail and new foam melee from Nerf has been scarce since. The 2026 One Piece Zoro katana assortment is the notable exception. For the original line, check secondhand listings.
