Switch Shot Mods
We have been witnessing a proliferation of Nerf guns in the past few years. Popular with both the younger set and geeky office types, the armaments offer a satisfying release in a way that does not hurt anyone. Within this win-win environment there has arisen a new sub-culture of experts in the modifications of these weapons to achieve higher performance.
A popular subject of such mods is the Nerf N-Strike Switch Shot EX-3. Out of the box, performance is quite satisfying as the ordinance includes whistling sonic micro darts ammunition with a 35-foot range. It also converts to a Wii remote controller allowing the gun to be used as a controller for the Nerf N-Strike Wii game.
Popular modifications of the Switch Shot will double the range of those whistling sonic micro darts. This one is moderately difficult, so read on to see if it is within your comfort zone. You’ll need to assemble the following tools before you begin:
• Dremel tool
• Screwdriver
• Knife
• Hot glue gun
You will need the following supplies:
• Coupler
• Heavy-Duty Spring
• The Switch Shot gun
Begin by removing the four screws that hold the gun together. Now remove the stock barrel. (You can simply cut it off.) Inside that assembly, you will find the plunger and spring. Now remove all of the orange part from the top of the plunger tube. This will leave the outer ring.
Now use your knife to remove the three ridges that are under the orange part, which is attached to the opening of the plunger tube. Now use your Dremel tool to shave off a bit of the inside of the coupler. Get it just right so it fits over the lip of the inner opening of the plunger tube.
Final Assembly
Once you have the plunger tube mod reassembled, apply hot glue liberally to achieve best performance. Now you will need to use your Dremel on the coupler to achieve the correct size that allows the shell to close. Now add the heavy-duty spring you acquired at the start of this project and glue all in place. Close up the gun with the four screws you have been saving since initial disassembly.
Fire at Will
Now take your Switch Shot out on the range and enjoy the new capabilities. Much more is now within range.
