Firefly Mods

The Nerf Firefly is a great, plastic toy Gatling gun with eight barrels firing glow-in-the-dark darts. The Firefly has different types of darts, scopes and light accessories, so it can be used in the night. The Firefly is great fun out-of-the-box, but you can also modify it to shoot farther, fire faster and perform better.

Nerf has a well-deserved reputation for manufacturing durable, lightweight toy guns. The Nerf Firefly shoots about 20 to 30 feet. But some users want to increase its performance.

Primary Nerf Firefly Mods

Most users of the Nerf Firefly want the toy gun to shoot farther. The two primary Nerf Firefly mods are 1) Air Restrictor Removal and 2) Spring Replacement. To perform these mods, the user will need a Phillips and flat screwdriver.

The Nerf Firefly is constructed with the screws on one side and the wiring on the other side. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws, carefully placing them in a safe location. Take off the casing by gently prying it open with the flat screwdriver. This will permit access to the barrel assembly and plunger.

For these modifications, you won't need to deal with any of the wires. Each of the eight barrels in the assembly has its own restrictor and spring. Remove these restrictors; reassemble the toy gun without the restrictors for more power and range.

The black plunge tube is in the center of the Firefly. Slide the plunge tube out of the casing. You will notice that there is a spring inside. Replace this spring with a more powerful spring for greater range. When you draw the trigger, you will notice that it is heavier; when you release the trigger, there is more power after these modifications.

Difficulty of Modifications

Most of the tools needed for the Nerf Firefly modifications are easy to find and already in most tool boxes. Adding a spring requires a little work and investment. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the most difficult), these modifications are a 3 in terms of difficulty.
